The “Corps de Musique de Landwehr de Genève” will interpret METROPOLIS, a foundational masterpiece for cinematographic representations of mechanized labor, fantastic visions of future cities, and robotics. The silent film was produced in the Babelsberg Studios in Berlin in 1927 by Austrian director Fritz Lang.

The film score, composed by Gottfried Huppertz, is intended to be performed by large symphony orchestras. As its genuine soundtrack, it is an essential part of the film, adding sound effects that enhance the actors’ performances.
The Corps de Musique de Landwehr de Genève:
Founded in 1789, it is one of the oldest “Corps de Musique” in Switzerland. Made up of amateur and professional musicians, its musical repertoire underscores the musicians’ qualities as well as their willingness to interpret a broad range of musical genres.The Landwehr de Genève was the laureate of the the two most recent Geneva cantonal music awards in the category excellence (2004 and 2009).
Jean-Christophe Monnier, conductor:
Jean-Christophe Monnier took over the direction of the Corp de Musique de Landwehr de Genève in 2003. Monnier is also the organistin the Saint-Pierre church in Yverdon-les-Bains, professor of harmony, analysis, and theoryat the Lausanne Music Conservatory, proof-reader for the prestigious Henle publishing house in Munich, and he is continuing the editionof the full works of Offenbach at Boosey & Hawkes in Berlin.
This event is the culmination of a research day “Re-inventing Metropolis” (pdf – french only) organized by Mrs. Dominique Kunz Westerhoff, professor, in the context of a series of lectures held at EPFL’s College of Humanities.
