Added Value – sustainable design is more than energy savings

Matthias Schuler
Engineer, Stuttgart

Matthias Schuler is Founder of Transsolar Energietechnik, Stuttgart, and Professor of Environmental Technology at the Graduate School of Design (GSD), Harvard University

Transsolar Energietechnik has become a leading provider of consulting services on developing sustainable design strategies for buildings. The firm also has offices in Munich and New York; and has a strong technical basis, and commonly performs highly sophisticated computational simulations for concept validations.

Beside climate engineering design, Transsolar collaborate with architects and artists to build large scale exhibitions. “Installations offer the artists or architects to include the comfort experience or show phenomena of physics supporting the expression of their works”.

Matthias Schuler studied mechanical engineering at the University of Stuttgart. From 1987 to 1992 he was a research assistant at the Institute of Thermodynamics and Thermal Process Engineering at the University of Stuttgart. In 1992 he founded the company Transsolar with 25 employees – one of the global leading consulting companies in the field of climate engineering. At the start of the winter semester 2008, after seven years as visiting professor, Matthias Schuler took up the newly created professorship for Environmental Technologies at Harvard University, Cambridge, USA.
