MULTISENSORY INTERFACES

On the occasion of the exhibition “Database, Network, Interface: The Architecture of Information”, Paula Strunden will present VR’s potential beyond its visual territory and explains how it could be used to explore the multimodal and syn-aesthetic nature of spatial experiences.
By presenting a series of 1:1 interactive models and experimental mixed reality installations, the use of VR in architecture is discussed from a phenomenological perspective and examined for its potential to facilitate more intuitive and embodied design and decision-making processes. Paula unpacks the thought processes behind designing the tactile interface ‘Je-Roaming’ and analyses why mixed reality objects trigger paradox sensations that could help us overcome the binary divide between actual and virtual worlds, between reality and imagination.

Based between Amsterdam and Vienna, Paula Strunden is an architectural designer and PhD researcher who develops and builds multisensory mixed reality installations. Having studied at the Bartlett School of Architecture UCL and worked for Raumlabor and Herzog & de Meuron, Paula’s work explores the imaginary potential of architecture at the intersection of virtual and physical realms. As Associate of Store, co-founder of Soft Bodies and the educational XR program Virtual Fruits, Paula has led VR/AR workshops at high schools and cultural institutions and tutored at the Bartlett Summer Studio and Architectural Association. Her room-scale XR installations have been exhibited at design and film festivals internationally, as well as the Royal Academy of Arts, Estonian Museum of Architecture and Eye Filmmuseum Amsterdam.
