Introduction to the historical context by Eric Hoesli, journalist, former editor in chief of Le Temps, professor at EPFL and at UNIGE.
Just one hundred years ago, Lenin and Trotski were launching an attack towards Petrograd and established a communist regime in what will then become the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics for almost seventy years.
For the anniversary of this major historical event in the history of the 20th century, the EPFL Art and Cultural Affairs are glad to host on the EPFL campus the project of the Harmony Orchestra of the State of Geneva and The General Line around Sergei Eisenstein’s movie which traces back these events.
- October : ten days that shook the world – soviet film by Sergei Eisenstein and Grigori Aleksandrov released in 1927.
- Orignal Soundtrack made by Jean-Christophe Monnier based on Chostakovitch’s work mainly.
- Live accompaniment by the Harmony Orchestra of the State of Geneva.
The Harmony Orchestra of the State of Geneva (Orchestre Harmonique de l’Etat de Genève, OHGe), its director Jean-Christophe Monnier and the association The General Line have indeed decided to unite their strengths in order to exploit a monument of the cinematic heritage for a projection with live accompaniment.
This project around Sergei Eisenstein’s October is totally new. First, it will allow the French-Speaking Swiss public to discover or rediscover a forgotten masterpiece which illustrates with remarkable veracity the historical events of 1917. Then, an original music accompaniment which draws from a repertoire that dates back to the era or closely associated with the event, will be realized by Jean-Christophe Monnier specially for these movie-concerts.
