Rolex Learning Center Forum
Concert at 6:30 pm – Doors at 6.00 pm
The idea behind the discovery concerts was born on a spring day in 2014, in the fertile gardens of the Cultural and Artistic Affairs. Their goal is to provide you with a window into modern, creative music, by inviting musicians, who, thanks to their innovative and dynamic projects, are making their mark on jazz stages (for the most part).
Two bands will share the spotlight in this first edition:

6:30 p.m. – LEO TARDIN – Landscape – piano solo
A pianist and the founder of the bad “Grand Pianoramax,” Leo Tardin released his first solo album, produced in collaboration with the Montreux Jazz Festival, last spring at the Cully Jazz Festival.
The artist of Swiss origin reveals himself at the fringes of intimacy, of voyages and encounters, both enduring and evanescent. The nine tracks recorded on DAWNSCAPE are new, never-before-heard highlights from Leo Tardin’s artistic trajectory – internal landscapes liberated by freedom of Jazz, with hints of folk and the fluidity of impressionism.
“DAWNSCAPE, is the contraction of dawn and landscape, the desire to immerse oneself into the fragility of the break of day, to seize the dwindling night, and to capture the instant, the evanescent, light. Music makes this possible.”

8:00 p.m. – PLAISTOW – Minimalism/Dub/Post-Jazz
Johann Bourquenez, piano
Vincent Ruiz, contrabass
Cyril Bondi, drums
With a name borrowed from a Squarepusher song title, this young trio of French-Swiss musicians make music that defies definition. What at first feels like jazz suddenly veers semi-electro. A melody barely emerges, only to be lost in a blasting metallic burst. Part rock, part Steve Reich’s minimalism. In between, a singular, spectacular band that for the past five years has been working, playing, and prospecting on an as yet unspoiled territory. Plaistow is without a doubt a genuine discovery.
By dropping all stylistic constraints, the band completely revisited the classic three-person piano, bass, and drum composition. Their music, entirely acoustic ever since Vincent Ruiz joined them on the contrabass in 2012, is in a constant state of evolution.
