On the northern fringe of the Rolex Learning Center
During the 2014-2015 academic year, Christian Gonzenbach will be invited as part of the Artist on the Campus program, led by EPFL’s Cultural and Artistic Affairs.
With a passion for science, Christian Gonzenbach works in the space where art and science meet. Thanks to his education and his frequent interactions with researchers – he was a resident artist at CERN and developed artistic projects on the topic of the Higgs boson – he has created a body of work that is inspired by scientific theories, that questions them, and sometimes puts them on the spot.
For EPFL, Christian Gonzenbach is considering producing an unconventional sculpture in situ by setting up a device that will create the work of art on site. Such experiments allow new forms to emerge, created by pouring a material a specific setting. Using a device to flow a liquid onto a prepared base, where it can solidify and give rise to unexpected shapes, he plans on presenting a large-scale sculpture.
Christian Gonzenbach metabolises scientific theories by producing works of art that are neither illustrative nor educational. If science, in general, measures, observes, and describes reality, Christian Gonzenbach seeks instead to act on reality and change it.
