Metalliseos – accordion/percussion duet

Tuesday, April 12, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.
Main Hall – SG building

By Too Hot To Hoot?:
Sofia Ahjoniemi (accordion)
Julien Mégroz (percussion)

Finnish composer Magnus Lindberg wrote “Metal Work” – a virtuoso duet at this time –  in 1984 in Berlin. This work comprises a total of 52 percussion instruments which blend with the accordion’s complex chords and rapid lines. “Metal Work” is a reference work for the accordion and percussion repertoire, yet remains difficult to schedule as it requires a heavy logistical workload.

From Finnish word for “alloy”, Metalliseos is a project entirely based on this latter work. Furthermore, the musical ensemble Too hot to hoot? ordered three new pieces to young swiss and american composers, asking to use solely percussion instruments from the original set to simplify organisation. Each in a very different register, these pieces of music mirror Magnus Lindberg’s works in their own way.

Concert programme :

  • William Dougherty (USA) – (good) vibrations (2015) – 10 min
  • Benoît Moreau (CH) – Scope (2015) 10 min
  • Kevin Juillerat (CH) Jeux (hi-lo-hi-mute) (2015) – 12 min
  • Magnus lindberg – Metal Work (1984) – 17 min

Not only this project promotes the music of these talented young composers, but also extend and develop the repertoire for percussion and accordion, which is today limited.
