Description of the internship
Air pollution is the 2nd leading cause of death in Côte d’Ivoire. Today, few air quality data are accessible due to a lack of measurements or dissemination of collected data.
AQ54 is an initiative from data354, that aims to collect and make available data about air quality in Africa, starting with Côte d’Ivoire, in partnership with Health and Environment ministers.
The AD54 team aims to deploy a network of 40 air quality sensors in Abidjan, to create a complete map of the city. The collected data will then be treated and shared in Open Data to citizens, stakeholders, NGOs and companies through a website and a mobile application developed by data354.
Your mission:
1) Maintain and develop partnerships with key stakeholders in the fight against air pollution (Ministers of environment and Health, Program for climate change, environmental NGOs, researchers…)
2) Search of funds (standby and rechercher des financements (monitoring and responding to calls for projects, pitching to potential investors) ;
– If funds are found: launch the AQ54 plan: Selon l’avancement des financements, lancer le plan AQ54 donc: Organize the acquisition of air quality sensors from the supplier and deploy them at the identified measurement sites;
– Participate in working groups on air quality measurement in Abidjan to refine the AQ54 plan drawn up by data354 and get stakeholders on board;
– Participate in conferences on air quality monitoring in Africa to develop the project in line with projects already developed in other African countries;
– Continuation of the pilot study begun by the previous intern: drafting of a report on the first months of data collection (data analysis approach, epidemiology, with a well documented methodology) with travel to the measurement sites.
Qualities and skills needed:
- Passion and knwoledge for environmental topics
- Knowledge about data science and IA.
- Knowledge about green finance is a bonus
- The will to go on the field and involve stakeholders.
- Proficiency in French. A suficient level in English would be a bonus.
Duration of the internship: 6 months
Place: Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire
Housing: Possibility to be hosted, or to have a contribution of 150 000 CFA (~220 CHF) for housing
