Iranian New Year Celebration
It is a privilege and honor to invite you all for the new year (Nowruz 1398). Nowruz is the celebration of Persian new year, which allows us to introduce the Iranian culture to the EPFL/UNIL community as well as having time for an Iranian feast and party.
What is Nowruz?
Nowruz/Norooz (نوروز) is the new year celebration in many countries including Iran, Afghanistan, Albania, Georgia, Azerbaijan and etc. Every year Nowruz is celebrated on the day of the vernal equinox as the first day of Spring, the beginning of the rejuvenation of mother earth. This ancient celebration has been among Iranians and other countries for over 3000 years and yet is still celebrated as the first day of Iranian Calendar.
Haft Sin(هفت سین) is a tabletop decoration of seven symbolic items traditionally displayed at Nowruz. Each item symbolizes an aspect of life cherished by people then and now. Haft in Farsi means seven and Sin correspond to a character of the Farsi alphabet “س” similar to “s”. All the symbolic items on Haft Sin start with the alphabet “س”. Many times families accompany the decoration with photos of their loved ones, mirror, candles and etc. which all bring meaning to their new year.
- Sabzeh (سبزه) – growing sprouts in a dish symbolizing rejuvenation
- Samanu (سمنو) – a sweet pudding made from wheat symbolizing sophisticated ancient Iranian cuisine with a week-long process of making,
- Senjed (سنجد) – dried Persian olive which symbolizes wisdom
- Seer (سیر) – garlic which symbolizes medicine
- Seeb (سیب) – apple which symbolizes health
