Definition of data breach
A data breach is any breach of security that results in the accidental or unlawful loss, alteration, deletion, destruction, disclosure or unauthorized access of personal data.
Example of data breach
- Accidental deletion of data for a research project on human beings stored by EPFL and not safeguarded elsewhere;
- Loss of an unsecured USB key containing an extract from the EPFL staff database;
- Malevolent entry into IS-Academia and modification of the results obtained by students;
- Simple unauthorised consultation of the results obtained by students in IS-Academia
