Accident insurance benefits
- Outpatient medical treatment provided by authorised doctors and dentists and, on their instruction, by paramedical staff. Medication and examinations prescribed by doctors or dentists, any hospital treatment in a general ward of an accepted establishment (treatment, food and accommodation). For medical treatment, insured patients have free choice (doctor, hospital).
- The reimbursement of unlimited travel expenses, transport and rescue in Switzerland and partially limited abroad as long as they are necessary from a medical point of view.
- In the event of a hospital stay, SUVA assumes the costs of treatment in a general ward. The additional costs in the case of treatment in a private ward are payable by the insured patient themselves or their private supplementary accident insurance if they have one.

To summarise
- According to the Federal Law on Accident Insurance (LAA), all workers employed in Switzerland are insured against occupational accidents and diseases, as well as against non-occupational accidents as of 8 hours of work per week for the same employer.
- For unpaid leave of more than one month, employees must obtain individual accident insurance at their own expense (SUVA or other insurance company). The first 31 days, the employee remains covered by SUVA. For a prolongation of coverage of up to 6 months, you can acquire interim accident insurance with SUVA by clicking on this link.
- At the end of your employment, LAA coverage ceases at the end of the 31st day following that on which entitlement to at least a half salary ended.
- EPFL guarantees all its employees with a permanent contract their salary for 365 days during the first two years of service or 730 days as from the 3rd year of service in the event of illness or accident (Art. 36 OPERS).
