Preparatory programme (CMS-3)

The CMS-3 is a preparatory programme aimed at migrants and refugees in Switzerland who have completed scientific upper secondary school studies in their home country but whose diploma does not meet the admission criteria for the EPFL Bachelor programme, and who do not have the required level of French to enrol in the CMS.

This programme, spanning three semesters, is designed to give students the time to learn French, expand their knowledge while becoming familiar with EPFL’s teaching methods, and immerse themselves in the campus student culture, so they can begin their Bachelor studies under the best possible conditions.

During the first semester, particular emphasis is placed on learning French and integration into the EPFL community, before focusing on the fundamental concepts of mathematics (analysis, linear algebra, and analytical geometry), physics, computer science, and chemistry.

Candidates are eligible if:

  • they reside in Switzerland
  • they have submitted an asylum application (ongoing or completed)
  • their French level is lower than B2
  • they hold a diploma that does not meet the criteria for admission to the Bachelor programme

Admission is based on the candidates’ application, a competency test, and a brief conversation in French (level B1 is recommended but not mandatory).

From 15th December 2024 to 31st January 2025.

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Proof of French level (B1 recommended but not mandatory)
  • Copy of a scientific upper secondary education diploma
  • Copy of an identity document and a Swiss immigration document

All applications will be considered, even if incomplete.

Applications should be sent to: [email protected], from 15th December 2024 to 31st January 2025.

This test, in the form of an oral exam, will last around 20 minutes and requires no particular preparation. The test will cover basic concepts in mathematics, technical skills, and reasoning ability.

Candidates will also undergo a brief assessment of their French level.

The programme runs from 17th February 2025 to June 2026.

The programme is entirely funded by a private foundation, meaning that candidates are exempt from registration fees and semester taxes.
