Mathematical thinking: between rigor and creativity
When intuition meets mathematical proof. Is nature governed by mathematical laws? What is the relationship between mathematics and philosophy? And between cryptography and logic? This is what participants in this pre-university week will discover as they develop their capacity for rigorous intellectual inquiry and tackle challenges as a team.
From truth tables and the golden ratio through to the axioms of set theory, Pythagorean triples and Euclid’s Elements, participants in this pre-university week will study a range of fundamental concepts to develop their mathematical thinking and refine their reasoning skills.
Students will improve their understanding of the definitions as well as the scope of the theorems and mathematical proofs, while also learning how this intellectual rigor can be applied to other logic-based fields such as computer science, philosophy or linguistics.
