The welfare of a society has always been and still is strongly related with the development of infrastructures to satisfy the needs of food, water, energy, transportation and housing, as well as the protection against natural disasters, under the constraints of sustainability and protection of the environment.

Civil engineers have the challenge to satisfy the vital needs of society by designing, building, managing and maintaining complex infrastructure projects with a global approach, taking into account socio-economical and environmental interactions.

They are generalists with high competences in various fields such as structures, hydraulic schemes and energy, geotechnics and tunnelling, transportation infrastructures and systems, management, legal and economical aspects, as well as environmental issues. Civil engineers work in multidisciplinary and very often multicultural teams.

Program’s objectives

This two-year Master’s program gives the students the required knowledge to face a big challenge: create the necessary infrastructures for economic prosperity, hence guaranteeing the whole population an adequate standard of living.

High priority is given to a transdisciplinary teaching in the ENAC School by bringing together civil engineers, architects and environmental engineers, through the program Design and build together.

Students may also choose to pursue one of the following specializations:

Geotechnics
Transportation and mobility
Structural engineering
Hydraulics and energy

An EPFL Master of Science in Civil Engineering leads the young graduates to a stimulating career in an engineering consulting firm, a construction company or a government agency, or allows them to open their own civil engineering consulting firm.

Admission criteria

This Master’s program is consecutive to a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering obtained at EPFL.

Bachelor’s degrees obtained in the same field but from another institution are eligible on the basis of an application dossier and must be accompanied by excellent academic records.

EPFL Bachelor’s degrees in another related field of science and engineering are also subject to a dossier-based analysis and are eligible if they are accompanied by excellent academic records.

The acquisition of additional credits to fill any gaps may be required.

Teaching languages

French and English. An excellent command of French or English, as well as a good command of the other language, is recommended.

Diploma and title obtained

Upon completion of their Master’s curricula, students obtain an EPFL Master of Science MSc in Civil Engineering. The diploma also gives graduates the right to use the title of EPF qualified civil Engineer.
