- You must have a minimum of 16 ECTS credits to be allowed to take the candidacy exam:
- 4 ECTS credits for Master or doctoral courses in Digital Humanities, Data Science or Life Sciences or any EPFL course recommended by EDDH in its course book. A doctoral external course in Digital Humanities can be considered as equivalence, with prior approval of both the thesis Director and EDDH Program Director.
- 12 ECTS credits: two semester projects for 6 ECTS each to which a grade will be given. At least one of these projects must be done in the thesis Director’s lab; the second one can be done either in the thesis Director’s lab or in another lab. This will be discussed case-by-case and will need the approval of both the thesis Director and EDDH program Director.

- If you do not have 16 ECTS credits already at the time of your candidacy exam, you need to fill the “extension request form“ and hand it signed (except for EDDH program director’s signature).
- Do not forget to select the option “credits” at the beginning of the form.
If not, it is recommended that you meet him/her before your candidacy exam.
Discuss with your thesis director regarding the organization of your candidacy exam which must take place at the end of the 1 year after your immatriculation date (who – where – when – what).
- If you are not able to have your exam before the end of your 1st year, fill the form “extension request form” and send it with the signatures (except the EDDH director’s) to the EDDH administrative assistant as soon as possible but at least 10 days prior end of your 1st year.
- Thank you to contact EDDH administrative assistant to notify her of the potential postponing of your candidacy exam.
Consult point 3 of EDDH regulation regarding the composition of the jury for your candidacy exam.
- Fill the jury proposal form after login in your ISA portal. Clic “Generate” then print it and ask for the signatures. The EDDH administrative assistant will take care of EDDH director’s signature.

Thank you to make sure that you send the jury proposal form for your candidacy exam at least 10 days prior the date of your candidacy exam.
- After you completed the jury proposal form, the coverpage for your Research Plan will be available for you start filling. The IS-Academia Guidelines for the Research Plan coverpage can be found here.
- There is no need to send your Research Plan plan to the EDDH administrative assistant before the candidacy exam.
You have to send your Research Plan to all the members of your jury a minimum of 7 days prior the date of your exam.
You will have to send by email:
- The PDF of the Research Plan coverpage that you have filled in IS-Academia with your signature, your thesis director’s and co-director’s. The EDDH administrative assistant will take care to collect the one from EDDH program director.
- The PDF of the Research Plan
Send the final version of the Research Plan with the signed cover page maximum 7 days after the candidacy exam.
