The aim of this project is to evaluate the current traffic management strategies and to investigate the feasibility of large-scale cooperative multi-modal smart traffic management schemes.
Many European cities experience daily significant level of congestion for all modes of transport. Given the complexity of congestion spatiotemporal dynamics, the task of evaluating and selecting between different operational strategies is challenging.
This project will provide the tools and the analytical framework to design traffic management schemes based on observable information describing their respective roadway networks. In addition, this research will develop new performance measures not only for transit planners but also for traffic engineers responsible for optimizing arterial traffic control.
On a methodological basis, it will tackle the problem of modeling and optimization in large-scale congested traffic networks with an aggregated realistic representation of traffic dynamics and route choice and multiple modes of transport.
The main objectives of the project are to (a) identify data needs that are collected from different sources (loop detectors, GPS, etc.), (b) analyze and evaluate the level of performance of the current traffic management strategy in different parts of the city of Geneva, (c) investigate the feasibility of “smart traffic management schemes” to decrease congestion for all modes of transport, (d) develop the methodological tools to answer all of the above.
This research project will last 12 months and will be carried out by the Urban Transport Systems Laboratory (LUTS) of Prof. Nikolas Geroliminis. It is sponsored by the Direction générale des transports – Etat de Genève.
