Rico Möckel

Short Biography

Rico Möckel joined the EPFL Biorobotics Laboratory (BioRob) in April 2009 to work on the Locomorph project and Roombots project. Locomorph is aiming at building novel legged modular robots that perform online learning and that allow exploration of morphological factors as well as morphosis. Roombots is aiming at creating novel self-reconfigurable modular robots.

Rico Möckel is a Postdoctoral researcher at BioRob. He received his Ph.D. from the ETH (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) Zurich in Switzerland. For his Ph.D. thesis he worked at the Institute of Neuroinformatics which belongs both to the University and ETH Zurich. For his Ph.D. he was working on the design of analog and mixed-mode Verly Large Scaled Integrated (VLSI) sensor and microprocessor chips for visual guidance of autonomous robots. In 2007 he was a member of the team of ETH students that was awarded with the “Presentation First Place” as well as a Gold Medal at the International Competition on Genetically Engineered Machines (iGEM) 2007 at MIT in Boston, USA. In 2008 Rico Möckel was accepted for the Neuromorphic Cognition Engineering Workshop in Telluride, USA.

Rico Möckel has a strong background in electrical engineering, intelligent robotics and computer science. He received a diploma (equivalent to MSc) in Electrical Engineering in June 2005 from the University of Rostock, Germany. For his excellent studies Rico Möckel was awarded as best engineering student of the University of Rostock of the year 2002. During his diploma project Rico Möckel developed a STDP floating-gate synapse in CMOS VLSI at the Institute of Neuroinformatics at the University and ETH (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) Zürich, Switzerland.

During his studies Rico Möckel joined the Biologically Inspired Robotics Group for an internship between April and September 2004 where he was working on the YaMoR modular robots. The publication of this work was awarded with the “Industrial Robot Highly Recommended Award” in 2005.

In October 2013 Rico Möckel joined the Locomotion Laboratory of Professor André Seyfarth at the Technical University Darmstadt. He remains a visiting researcher at the EPFL Biorobotics Laboratory.
