Education

GR-MeC teaching aims at inspiring, educating and boosting the next generation of structural engineers through dynamic, interactive and hands-on teaching activities. At GR-MeC we provide education regarding the use of composite materials for designing performant engineering structures, and present innovative structural design concepts using composite materials. Teaching activities are cross-disciplinary between structural engineering, materials science, entrepreneurship and architecture and are open to all EPFL students interested in these areas.

Structural mechanics (CIVIL-238)

Civil Engineering Section, Bachelor semester 4 (obligatory)

The course discusses the basic principles of structural mechanics, analyzing the performance of materials and structures against loading and focuses on the stress strain relationships and the effect of axial, bending, shear and torsional loadings on engineer structures.

Floating offshore renewables (PENS-229)

Civil Engineering Section, Bachelor semester 4 (optional)

Rethink floating offshore renewable energy systems and propose new concepts for collection, management and distribution of energy at sea for reduced cost and improved environmental impact.

Advanced composites in engineering structures (CIVIL-443)

Civil Engineering Section, Master semesters 1,3 (optional and open to all EPFL community)

Focus on the performance of composite materials for engineering applications. The topics cover a multitude of domains, from the introduction to composites, to the stress analysis, manufacturing and production of composite materials and structural components. Hands on experience (2 sessions in the laboratory), and possibility to design/fabricate composite structural components as part of the course project (potentially in combination with semester projects)

Composites design and innovation (Civil-464)

Civil Engineering Section, Master semesters 1,3 (optional and open to all EPFL community)

Gain practical experience in the characterization of fiber reinforced polymer and manufacturing/production methods for composite structures. The material is presented by lectures and visits to the laboratory. This is mainly a project based – hands on course where the students work in teams to conceive, manufacture, test and deliver a composite prototype.

Selected topics on advanced composites in engineering structures (Civil-705)

Doctoral Program in Civil and Environmental Engineering (EDCE)

Focus on fatigue and fracture of advanced composite materials, structural components and adhesive joints.
