Area of Interest
My research is multi-disciplinary and focuses on issues at the intersection of human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, and behavioral science. I am especially interested in user modeling and building personalized decision support tools, including recommender systems. Recently I became also interested in sentiment analysis in social media.

Technology Transfer
- Between 1997 – 2000, I co-founded a start up company, Iconomic systems and served as the chairwoman until its sale to i:FAO, the number one business travel provider in Europe.
- I am a board member of Eayun, Inc., a Chinese startup company created by my former student. Eayun provides cloud products and services to help enterprise customers build their cloud infrastructures.
- Located next to Tshinghua University (the top university in China), it just finished its second round of investment with 15 million RMB.
Example critiquing, a type of recommender technology, was incorporated into MovieLens, the first movie recommender system and the software technology that won the prestigious ACM Software System Award. - Example critiquing is being commercialized by Preddigo, a startup company providing recommender solutions with an average of 10 to 1 ROI every month. It has more than 40 business customers, all of them are online e-commerce website, including well-known retailers such as MediaMart, Richardo, Movenpick, and Payot.
- I have co-advised and graduated four students who are founders and executives of startup companies specialized in recommender technology, information visualization, and personalized cloud services.
