Abstract:
Considering the targets of the energy transition, there is a strong need to reduce the CO2 emissions of the industrial sector. This means not only to increase the efficiency of the industrial processes but also to transition from fossil based raw materials and energy to renewable based resources. In this context, it is also important to consider in an integrated way, the municipal and industrial waste management and recycling. One of the key factors to achieve this target is to develop industrial symbiosis concepts that will transition towards the circular economy: transforming waste into products and converting renewable energy sources into useful energy.
The methods to be developed are based on large scale system models that explore the possible interconnections that can be generated in a given industrial cluster, an eco-park or an urban area. A data base of models will be developed. It will include the industrial processes, the biorefineries in order to substitute fossil-based materials by bio-based materials and to cogenerate biofuels, the waste management processes including sorting, recycling, reuse and conversion as well the renewable energy conversion and seasonal storage technologies.
The decision support tool and the corresponding methods will define a platform to develop entrepreneurship activities in the business of integrated waste management and energy efficiency and will help in defining business cases for the circular economy implementation and monitoring.
