Her research interests include photonics and monolithic integration of MEMS (piezoelectric MEMS and electrostatic MEMS), on-chip integration of THz sources, on-chip integration of Mid-infrared CO2, and on-chip integration of quantum single-photon sources.

From 2021 to 2023, she worked as a Senior Scientist at Silicon Austria Labs GmbH in Austria, where she co-led several projects involving on-chip photoacoustic sensors (design + fabrication), dual-frequency piezoelectric MEMS microphones(fabrication), high-performance PMUTs (fabrication), high spectral-ratio α-Si columns for CO2 sensors(fabrication), Piezo Micromirror + Metasurfce (part design + fab). She also designed photonic crystal-coupled plasma waveguides and participated as main applicant in several funded projects such as SFB, European Horizons and FFG.

From 2019 to 2021, she was a postdoctoral researcher at KAUST, where she worked on on-chip integrated graphene-resonators and advanced THz sources. She also contributed to the reverse design of plasma metasurfaces and fabrication of MEMS and metasurfaces for 3D imaging.

From 2017 to 2018, she was a postdoctoral researcher at KTH in Sweden, where she collaborated with Senseair AB and AKM Corp. to quantify mid-infrared waveguide transmission loss and optimize on-chip integrated CO2 sensors.

From 2016 to 2017, she was a postdoctoral researcher at Tohoku University in Japan, where she worked on Huawei’s project on on-chip integrated MEMS optical switch arrays.

During her Ph.D. studies at Tsinghua University, Yanfen Zhai pioneered the study of chalcogenide glass (ChG) waveguides and their quantum applications, culminating in the creation of a high-quality quantum single photon source at room temperature.
