Motivation and goal
Complications of Diabetes Mellitus can lead to peripheral neuropathy, causing a lack of sensitivity in the foot that may result in skin damage and ulcers. Ulcers are typically induced by high-pressure points on the plantar surface of the foot, which often go unnoticed by patients with peripheral neuropathy.
Current state of the research
We are currently developing intelligent footwear with the ability to sense and offload these pressure points, preventing the formation of foot ulcers. The footwear is equipped with pressure-sensing devices as well as sole morphing actuators to redistribute pressure and avoid high-pressure points.
