The SEMS system separates sampled particles according to size by giving them equal electrical charges using an ionizing source, and sending the sample flow through an electrical field. By changing the strength of the field, particles of different sizes are separated into the outflow of the SEMS. Our system counts the particles in each size bin across the scan using condensation particle counters (CPCs); this instrument is crucial to understand how many particles are found in the air and clouds at different sizes.
