The WRF model version 4.0.1, with augmented cloud microphysics (Sotiropoulou et al., ACP, 2021; Georgakaki et al., ACP, 2021; Georgakaki et al., npj Clim.Atm.Sci., 2024) is used for non-hydrostatic cloud-resolving simulations of the conditions at Mt.Helmos and the surrounding region. The model has been setup to run with three two-way nested domains, with a respective horizontal resolution of 12, 3 and 1 km. The ERA5 reanalysis dataset is used to initialize the model and provide the lateral forcing at the edge of the 12-km resolution domain every 6 hours. Static fields at each model grid point come from default WRF pre-processing system datasets, with a resolution of 30″ for both the topography and the ‘land use’ fields. The MODIS-based dataset is used for land cover. Regarding the physics options chosen to run WRF simulations, we follow the approach outlined in Georgakaki et al., npj Clim.Atm.Sci., 2024.
