In a context questioning urban sprawl, the architectural project is expected to play a central role in the search for alternatives promoting the reorientation of urban development inwards, densification close to public transport, and sustainable construction approaches. The Waldstadt site selected for the DENSE AGAIN Studio consists of a Wooded strip bordering the city of Bern and separated from the Bremgarten forest by the A1 motorway. The evolution of this portion of the city is currently being questioned and is emblematic of the issues linked to the reorientation of urban development. Indeed, this sector of approximately 40 hectares offers strategic potential in terms of urbanization. It would eventually accommodate nearly 7,000 inhabitants in the center of the Bern agglomeration, near the heart of the federal capital.
The Studio proposal includes not only the development of a new type of urban fabric but also the coverage of the motorway to generate new links between the city and the forest. The workshop offers an unprecedented exploration of various forms of urban development and building layouts that can be envisaged for this place. The approaches focus in particular on the relationship of buildings with the context, induced by a new dialectic between city and nature.
