The efforts to reorient the development of the built environment in order to limit urban sprawl are not limited to city centers. Indeed, certain suburban sectors, especially those located in the direct vicinity of public transport and with the potential for densification, constitute strategic opportunities for the transformation of urban regions. But if the density is an essential quantitative issue, it should be considered as a necessary but not sufficient condition. From a sustainability perspective, the development of these sectors requires optimized consideration of environmental, socio-cultural, and economic aspects, which also raises many qualitative questions for the architectural project.
For this 2015-2016 academic year, the SUBURBAN LANDSCAPE Studio continues to explore the potential of a site located in West Lausanne that is particularly emblematic of the issues linked to the transformation of suburban spaces. This vast sector located at the intersection of several landscape entities currently consists of brownfields and undeveloped land intended for densification. By its specific location, it is dedicated to accommodating both spaces intended for housing and activities. Indeed, this strategic sector is likely to accommodate more than 3,000 inhabitants and 2,000 jobs in a dense neighborhood, whose new identity has yet to be invented. The continuation of the various investigations of the Studio focuses, among other things, on this challenge by exploring different conceptual and spatial scenarios to create a new suburban polarity on the site.
