Giuseppe Zuccarello – SNSF Ambizione Fellow
Giuseppe Zuccarello studied chemistry at the University of Basel and at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zürich (ETH) working on stereodivergent total synthesis of tetrahydrocannabinols under the direction of Prof. Erick M. Carreira. He completed his PhD at the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ) in Tarragona, Spain under the supervision of Prof. Antonio M. Echavarren. His doctoral thesis focussed on the design of new chiral ligands for gold(I)-catalyzed transformations and the development of novel C-H insertion reactions of gold(I) carbenes. In 2020 he joined the research group of Prof. Gregory C. Fu at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, USA as a SNSF Postdoc Mobility fellow working on the development and mechanistic studies of photo- and non-photoinduced enantioselective Cu-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. He then returned to his Alma Mater to explore the field of catalysis in supramolecular containers in the group of Prof. Konrad Tiefenbacher. In early 2024, he opened the doors of his new laboratory as a SNSF Ambizione Fellow at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL).
Research
The Zuccarello Group opened their doors in January 2024 and is embedded in the LCSA unit at EPFL. Our research focuses on the development of novel bifunctional photocatalysts and catalytic systems to address shortcomings in selective catalysis. To achieve our goals, we rely on sustainable technologies such as photoredox and earth-abundant metal catalysis. Learn more on our website.
