Vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) are an example of fluid-structure interaction, characterized by the mutual coupling between the motion of an object and vortices shed in its wake. VIV should be either avoided when vibrations are detrimental to the mechanical integrity of the structure (bridge, building), or optimized in systems aiming at harvesting energy.
In this project, a simplified model of VIV will be used and the effect of stochastic operating conditions (for ex. fluctuating flow velocity) on the statistics of the system’s performance will be investigated with analytical solutions and Matlab simulations.
