Master Project
Flows past 3D bluff bodies with planar symmetry are relevant to ground transportation (cars, trains, trucks). In the turbulent regime, observations show that the wake is bi-stable, oscillating randomly between 2 states that break the symmetry of the body. In the laminar regime, steady symmetry-breaking modes as well as unsteady vortex shedding are observed experimentally; stability analysis finds similar modes in other 3D bluff bodies with planar symmetry (rectangular plates) or rotational symmetry (disks, spheres).
In this project, stability analysis will be performed numerically on the wake of a 3D bluff body with planar symmetry, and the effect of various parameters will be studied.
