Carbide reinforced titanium composites prepared by novel sintering method

The aim of this semester project is to study Ti/TiC composites processed by a novel sintering method. The student will use several characterization techniques to assess the material microstructure: sample preparation, optical microscopy, and, depending the needs of the project, deeper analysis (SEM in imaging, EDX, and/or EBSD modes; XRD) and will implement a mechaniacoustic method for the measurement of physical properties of these two-phase material, aiming to draw a link between the microstructure of the material and its elastic and damping characteristics.

This semester project will thus include an introduction to learning several methods of experimental analysis characteristic of a metallurgical laboratory and will receive an introduction to materials produced by modern, flash sintering methods.
