2021 is the synonym of the restart of life at the lab and of meeting other scientists in “3D” again. This year, the annual meeting between the Swiss Physical Society (SPS) and the Austrian Physical Society (ÖPG) took place from the 30th of August until the 3rd of September in Innsbruck, Austria. This town is nestled in a valley in the heart of the Alpes and offers a magnificent view of the surrounding mountains, which are easily accessible by cable car.
During the annual joint meeting there was the possibility to follow dedicated plenary talks given by experts in several fields about ongoing research topics. One of the most followed ones proved to be the one by Prof. Luciano Rezzolla, who introduced the hot topic of the first photograph of a black hole, which was realised by the Event Horizon Telescope collaboration in April 2019. Another interesting talk was given by Prof. Lisa Kaltenegger, who explained new ideas and challenges to identify exoplanets in the future. Other topics of plenary talks concerned e.g. social sciences, i.e. the communication of science with the public, and the evolution of scientific communication through the centuries.
This year seven members of LPHE had the chance to present their research in the session “Nuclear, particle and astrophysics”. The talks in chronological order:
- Elena Graverini (LPHE-LS), “Flavour anomalies in b → sll meson decays: a review“
- Sonia Bouchiba (LPHE-LS), “Study of a very rare decay with multiple leptons in the final state at the LHCb experiment“
- Veronica Kirsebom (LPHE-OS), “Measuring the decay B + → ρ0 μ+ ν μ at LHCb”
- Marie Bachmayer (LPHE-OS), “Amplitude analysis of B → K pi pi gamma decays at LHCb”
- Carina Trippl (LPHE-OS), “Micro-lens enhanced silicon photomultiplier arrays for the LHCb SciFi Tracker”
- Ettore Zaffaroni (LPHE-OS), “The SND@LHC data acquisition system”
- Joanna Wanczyk (LPHE-LS), “Precision Luminosity Measurement at the LHC“
