NCCR MICS – Swiss National Research Centre for Mobile Information and Communication Systems (since 2001)
The Swiss National Research Centre for Mobile Information and Communication Systems. The Center’s goal is to study fundamental and applied questions raised by new generation mobile communication and information services, based on self-organisation. Such systems have become very topical lately with the advent of ad-hoc mobile networks and peer-to-peer services on the Internet. Yet, many of the fundamental questions remain to be solved, and applications are often only emerging now. The Center’s distinguishing feature is to bring together a broad set of researchers (about 30 faculty members and 70 PhD students) to study most aspects of self-organizing, distributed communication and information services in a coherent manner. These investigations range from fundamental mathematical issues (statistical physics based analysis, information and communication theory) to networking, signal processing, security, distributed systems, software architecture and economics. The centre started in 2001, and Karl Aberer is responsible as director of the centre as from 2005.
