BIOGRAPHY
Daniele Mari was born in Milan in 1961, After a scientific high school degree obtained in Italy Daniele Mari joins EPFL in 1980 and graduates in Physics in 1986. In 1991, he obtains the Ph.D. from the same institution working in the field of metal-ceramic composites. From 1992 to 1993 he continues his research as a post-doc at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a work on shape-memory alloys.
In 1993, he joins the company Amysa Yverdon SA (Switzerland) as director of Research and Development and creates ACME (Advanced Composite & Microwave Engineering), the first company resident on the EPFL Science Park. In 2004, he returns to academia at EPFL leading a research group specialized in Mechanical Spectroscopy. D. Mari obtains the title of MER (Senior Scientist) in 2011 and is appointed Adjunct Professor in 2022. He is co-author of more than 100 scientific papers and editor of several books in Materials Science. He is the Deputy Director of the Physics School at EPFL since 2013. He is responsible of the Physics Laboratories for students and of the service of Physics Auditoria. He is a member of the Editorial board of the International Journal of Refractory Metals and Hard Materials.
RESEARCH
The principal focus of D. Mari activity has been for many years the study of the mechanical properties of Hardmetals. In particular, he investigated their mechanical behaviour at high temperature and the residual stresses using neutron and x-ray diffraction. He has also investigated shape memory alloys developing a new type of composite based on NiTi and TiC. His present research projects concern steels, composite materials and nanocomposites for mechanical energy and aerospace applications. Since 2004, Prof. Mari co-chairs every 4 years the International Conference on the Science of Hard Materials ICSHM9.
He is also referee for many journanls and science-funding organizations. He will organize in 2025 the next International Conference on Internal Friction and Mechanical Spectroscopy ICIFMS20 in Lausanne
TEACHING
He presently teaches at the Physics Laboratory for students in Physics at EPFL. He is also working as scientific advisor for the development of experiments dedicated to teaching physics at EPFL.
