Dr. Olivier Steiger was born in Bern, Switzerland, in 1976. He received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) in 2001 and 2005, respectively. In 1998, he was awarded a one-year exchange fellowship to study at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, USA. In 2001, he joined Prof. Touradj Ebrahimi’s group as a research assistant at the Signal Processing Institute, EPFL, working on video segmentation, description and transcoding. He was a visiting student at Queen Mary, University of London, in 2003.
In 2005, Dr. Steiger joined the corporate research centre of ABB (CHCRC) in Baden, Switzerland, where he is currently holding a position as a Principal Scientist. His research interests include the design of digital architectures and signal processing methods for embedded systems, optical sensing technologies, and industrial applications of image processing. From 2007 to 2009, he has further headed the discretionary fund of the sensing department at CHCRC. Since 2009, he is leading the technology watch activity of ABB’s Sensors and Signal Processing program. Dr. Steiger is also in charge of a research collaboration with the University of Cambridge, UK, and he has been supervising the work of 13 internship and M.Sc. students.
Dr. Steiger acts as a reviewer for many leading international conferences and journals, and he is the author of several referred publications and patents. He has also served as a session chair and organization committee member for international conferences. He is a member of the IEEE.
