The grand challenge of virtual reality (VR) is to deliver multiple different types of sensational feedback for achieving realistic experience for user. Shape-change interfaces autonomously change their geometries in response to the user’s actions, can deliver a tangible feeling besides the visual information. We investigated an origami-based interactive platform, which embeds distributed sensing and novel low-profile smart material-based actuation system. Its origami-inspired structure can transform from single 2D configuration into various 3D shapes not only in physical appearance, but also in virtual visual modeling according to kinematics of origami and sensory feedback of physical device. This platform enables multi-modal stimulation for creating a bidirectional relationship between physical and virtual environments that will revolutionize the way of communication with VR technology.
