Mirko Musa, Director
Mirko is a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Hydraulic Engineering at EPFL and director of the STREEM Lab (Sustainable River Engineering, Energy, and Morphodynamics). Previously, he was a Research Scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (USA), leading research on hydropower technology and sustainability. He holds a Ph.D. in Civil, Environmental, and Geo-Engineering from the University of Minnesota, where he studied the interaction between in-stream hydrokinetic turbines and river morphodynamics at St. Anthony Falls Laboratory. He also earned a B.S. and M.S. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Trento, Italy. When he’s not thinking about rivers and renewable energy, Mirko can be found road biking, hiking and camping, or chasing good live music—sometimes all in the same weekend.
Louise Cayroche, Doctoral Assistant
Louise joined STREEM as a PhD student in September 2025. She holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from EPFL, where she specialized in fluid mechanics and graduated in 2024. Beyond her academic interests in fluid dynamics, Louise enjoys making ceramics, music, reading, and caring for plants.
Clemente Gotelli, Postdoctoral Researcher
Clemente Gotelli is a Scientist at the STREEM Lab at EPFL, which he joined in October 2025. He holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Hydraulic Engineering from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, where he graduated in 2018 with a focus on fluid mechanics applied to hydrokinetic turbines. After two years of professional experience as an engineer, he joined EPFL as a PhD student, conducting research on river morphodynamics and sediment transport in braided rivers. His academic interests lie in fluid mechanics, sediment dynamics, and river engineering, and he is deeply passionate about teaching these subjects. Outside of work, Clemente enjoys cooking, political science, and cinema.
Antonio Magherini, Doctoral Assistant
Antonio is a PhD student at the STREEM Lab since November 2025. He holds a BSc in Environmental Engineering from the University of Firenze and an MSc in Civil – Hydraulic Engineering from TU Delft. His research focuses on integrating traditional and data-driven modelling approaches for hydraulic and morphodynamics analysis. His doctoral project investigates the evolution of fluvial bedforms and their influence on sediment transport processes. Before joining EPFL, he gained working experience in Italy, the Netherlands, and Belgium. Besides scrolling through stunning images of rivers, in his free time you’ll likely find him hiking, playing the guitar, discovering new cities, or listening to emerging musicians.
Sophie Bauer, Administrative Assistant
Sophie was originally schooled in biology, obtaining a B.A. in molecular biology from UC Berkeley. She then applied her interests in project coordination to the commercial and academic sector, joining EPFL as Administrative Assistant in 2017. This allows her to dedicate her free time to singing, playing and writing music. Her other interests include literature, Fiat Abarths and various DIY projects.
