The African Cities Lab first annual summit took place on May 23rd and 24th of 2023. For a first edition, this global event were held both online and on-site in Cotonou, Ben Guerir and Kumasi.
One of the main objectives of this international conference was to increase the scope and outreach of academic research activities related to African smart cities development.
With more than 2,000 attendees, the African Cities Lab – 2023 Summit united an intergenerational and multisectoral community to create smart, sustainable and inclusive cities in Africa.
The chosen theme of the African Cities Lab Summit first edition is “Datafrication: harnessing the power of data to rethink African city models and improve the living environment“. During the event, the opportunities of collecting data for urban services such as mobility, construction, security, health, urban management or tourism were presented.
4 round tables were organised on the following themes:
- Digital applied to the urban to the management of urban services,
- Digital applied to urban training,
- Digital applied to urban social innovation,
- Infrastructure and IoT management.
The Association of African Universities under the ACE Impact Project in collaboration with the EPFL – École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland) commenced the implementation of the Centers of Competence in Digital Education (C-CoDE) Initiative in September 2021. The C-CoDE initiative aims to establish Centers of Competence in Digital Education in Benin, Burkina Faso, Nigeria and Ghana to promote the sustainable integration of digital education in the teaching processes, as a means of strengthening the quality of teaching as well as the competencies of graduates.
The AAU and EPFL in collaboration with ACETEL are organizing a Regional Conference on the “Sustainable Integration of Digital Education in the post Covid-19 era”. Il will be hosted in Abuja, Nigeria on the 12th and 13th May 2022. This high-level event is open to participants from all the ACE Impact Centers, Policy Makers, other universities in Benin and interested stakeholders.

Il will be hosted in Cotonou, Benin on the 28th and 29th April 2022. This high-level event is open to participants from all the ACE Impact Centers, Policy Makers, other universities in Benin and interested stakeholders.
To prepare for the launch of the Excellence in Africa initiative, the EPFL and the Francophonie Service of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs – FDFA, in close collaboration with the Swiss Embassy in Ivory Coast, wishes to bring together French-speaking African and Swiss academics interested in the emergence of research excellence in Africa with the following objectives:
- To map all the problems encountered by researchers in Africa;
- To list the possible solutions implemented by African researchers;
- Publish a compilation of good practices to promote the development of laboratories of excellence in Africa.
