Launched by the Swiss Federal Railways, this transdisciplinary project aims to provide methods and design solutions for the future transformation of the more than 300 regional railway stations in Switzerland into mobility hubs, places featuring a wide range of services for travelers and non-travelers alike, as well as offering qualitative spaces and integration with the surrounding neighborhoods.
The Habitat Research Center is part of the research team (EPFL – ETHZ), and specifically addresses the spatial challenges of this transformation, focusing on three case study sites: Bern Wankdorf, Nyon, and Ostermundigen, from the spatial scale to the urban fabric. The project started in July 2020 and will be completed by March 2022. In order to prepare the mobility of Switzerland in 2050 from an energy-neutral perspective, a series of crucial spatial themes are analyzed through cartographic fieldwork and benchmarked against state-of-the-art practices and projects.
