Horizon Europe is the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation with a budget of €95.5 billion. It tackles climate change, helps to achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and boosts the EU’s competitiveness and growth.
The programme facilitates collaboration and strengthens the impact of research and innovation in developing, supporting and implementing EU policies while tackling global challenges. It supports creating and better dispersing of excellent knowledge and technologies.
The targets of Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG 2) are to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture. SDG 2 will be of prime importance in the next Research & Innovation Framework Programme, Horizon Europe, in Cluster 6 “Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment”.
Cluster 6 aims to improve knowledge and innovation to enhance inclusive, safe and healthy food systems, as well as to ensure food and nutrition security for everyone, while respecting the planetary boundaries.
Food system challenges are complex and require a systems thinking approach. For all activities, the involvement of various players such as practitioners, public and private institutions as well as citizens will be vital in order to transform local and global food systems.
