Photonics Sensing for Mobility – 01.06.2023
The objective of the workshop is to bring together a small group of companies interested in innovating by using photonic technologies in mobility.
Dr Andrey Voloshin from Prof. Tobias Kippenberg’s lab and Prof. Edoardo Charbon will give a brief overview of photonics sensing for mobility and present their research activities at EPFL related to that field. In particular, exciting advancements in light detection and ranging (LiDAR) for autonomous and semi-autonomous mobility will be presented in more details.

There will be time to discuss about companies’ needs. Funding opportunities for prototyping are possible through the European project PhotonHub, for innovation projects involving partners in at least two different countries, or Innosuisse, for projects involving only EPFL and Swiss-based companies.
Speaker
Prof. Edoardo Charbon leads the Advanced Quantum Architecture Laboratory. His research interests include 3-D vision, LiDAR, FLIM, FCS, NIROT to super-resolution microscopy, time-resolved Raman spectroscopy, and cryo-CMOS circuits and systems for quantum computing. He has authored or co-authored over 400 papers and two books, and he holds 23 patents. Prof. Charbon is a distinguished visiting scholar of the W. M. Keck Institute for Space at Caltech, a fellow of the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience Delft, a distinguished lecturer of the IEEE Photonics Society, and a fellow of the IEEE. | |
Dr Andrey Voloshin leads technology transfer projects and is responsible for the development of hybrid integrated light sources as well as photonic packaging. Andrey develops laser sources with the frequency noise on a par with fiber lasers and unprecedented broad laser frequency actuation bandwidth. This wafer-scale laser technology is enabling for the frequency modulated continuous wave LiDAR. Lasers based on low-cost components (MEMS actuators, silicon nitride and indium phosphide) provide exceptional performance and eliminate the need for linearization/pre-distortion which is known to be a major challenge for FMCW LiDAR.
