Advanced Photonic Sources and Materials

The objective of the workshop is to bring together a small group of companies interested in innovating by using photonics technologies for energy and environment.

This workshop will give you an inspiration of how advanced photonic sources and materials can be tailored to be used in many different applications in the telecoms, sensing, healthcare, spectroscopy and metrology. The first speaker, Dr. Lafforgue will show how very compact light sources integrated in photonic circuits can be developed and will show the example of ultra broadband supercontinuum sources. The second speaker, Prof. Fabien Sorin specialized in materials science, will focus on soft materials for diverse photonic applications mostly in sensing and healthcare.

There will be time to discuss about companies’ needs. Funding opportunities for prototyping are possible through the European project PhotonHub, for innovation projects involving partners in at least two different countries, or Innosuisse, for projects involving only EPFL and Swiss-based companies.

Speakers

Dr. Christian Lafforgue is a post-doctoral researcher at EPFL in the Photonic Systems Laboratory, led by Professor Camille-Sophie Brès. He received his master’s degree in electrical engineering from Université Paris-Saclay and Ecole Normale Supérieure Paris-Saclay in 2018. He obtained his PhD in nanotechnology from Université Paris-Saclay (Centre de Nanosciences et de Nanotechnologies) in 2021. His research is centered on integrated nonlinear optics, with a focus on electro-optic modulation and supercontinuum generation in silicon-based photonics platforms. The Photonic Systems Laboratory specializes on the design, simulation and demonstration of optical waveguides and devices for enhancing and controlling nonlinear processes aimed at light generation, signal processing, or sensing.
Professeur Fabien Sorin obtained an engineer diploma and MS in Physics from Ecole Polytechnique in France, and a PhD from the department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, Cambridge USA). After 3 years at the Research Laboratory of Electronics at MIT as a postdoctoral fellow, he joined the company Saint-Gobain as a research scientist in Aubervillers, France. In 2013, he joined the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL, Switzerland) as an assistant professor in the Institute of Materials, where he became associate professor in 2020. His research interests lie in advanced manufacturing and fiber processes, related fluid dynamics problems, fiber-based devices, optical metasurfaces, flexible electronics and optoelectronics, smart systems for health care and drug delivery, and smart textiles.
