Objective of the course

The aim of this course is to offer a solid foundation in learning, teaching, transversal skills and complex problem solving in the context of addressing sustainability issues.

The course is organised in 4 modules :

  1. Learning : how do adults learn, theories on learning, and lifelong learning
  2. Teaching and tutoring : how teaching connects to what we perceive as learning, what makes for “good” teaching, creating learning opportunities and scaffolding student learning and assessment
  3. Transversal skills : working with transversal skills to support learning, skill development, and 
assessment of skills
  4. Tutoring and teaching in complex sustainability problems : strategies and concepts important in understanding the complexity of sustainability problems, and how to develop systems thinking to address wicked problems

In the second semester, the focus will be on facilitating learning of BA2 students attending course on sustainability. It will include reflections and preparations sessions as well as supporting student groups in finalizing their course project.

  • Understand yourself, your role and your contribution as a facilitator
  • Work with ease, with a group by understanding and responding to their needs
  • Work successfully, with feedback, managing time and stages of project development
  • Be capable to understand complexity of sustainability and how to work transversally with wicked problems

Expected student activities

Students will be expected to :

  • Participate in group and individual meta-cognitive activities
  • Facilitate the learning of first-year students of the course “Durabilité – ENV-101” every Tuesday
  • Actively participate in debriefing and reflection sessions every Wednesday
  • Prepare the tutoring session for the following week in small teams

Language of teaching

French and English

The pedagogical courses will be conducted in English, while topics related to sustainability will mainly be addressed in French. Students will have the option to express themselves, write, and participate in the language of their choice, whether it be French or English.

However, facilitating the learning of BA2 students in the second semester will require basic proficiency in French. If needed, students can improve their French skills by enrolling in a language course or participating in a TANDEM language exchange program during the fall semester.
