Bachelor
The training in basic sciences (mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science) is spread over the three years of the Bachelor’s degree (180 ECTS), thus allowing a good number of courses specific to civil engineering to be taken in the first year (statics, geology, structures, materials). The second and third years include courses in soil and fluid mechanics, structures (concrete, metal, wood), hydraulics and transport, and conclude with a first project to put knowledge into practice and synthesise it.
The bachelor’s degree in civil engineering is an academic (not professional) recognition that allows the student to continue his or her education at EPFL, or at another academic institution in Switzerland or abroad, in order to obtain an engineering degree.
Distribution of education in the different fields
- Basic sciences: mathematics, physics, chemistry and computer science. For the treatment and understanding of the specific fields of building and design engineering.
- Sciences specific to Civil Engineering: for an interdisciplinary approach to problems related to land use planning.
- ENAC teaching: common to the three sections of the ENAC faculty (Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Architecture) through “Projeter Ensemble” projects.
- SHS (human and social sciences) teaching: common to all EPFL sections.
