Renewable energy systems

Achieving energy sustainability has become one of the global challenges of the 21st century, prompted by the need to mitigate the negative impacts of fossil fuels on global warming and air pollution. It requires a transition towards renewable energy sources (e.g., solar energy, wind energy, hydropower, geothermal energy and bioenergy) and improved energy efficiency. In this context, a detailed and thorough understanding of sustainable energy systems and their interaction with the environment is needed to optimize their design and operation, and to guarantee their sustainability and economic feasibility.
IIE focuses on the following issues related to energy sustainability:
• Development of tools for the prediction and optimization of renewable energy systems
• Understanding and quantification of the environmental impact of different energy sources
• Development and assessment of strategies for the transition towards energy sustainable cities
