Waste (Water) Treatment

A major goal of environmental engineers is the maintenance of high quality water, soil and air. These essential environmental resources are increasingly impacted by a multitude of contaminants of anthropogenic origin.

A detailed and thorough understanding of the biological, chemical, and physical processes affecting the fate of contaminants in natural and engineered systems is required in order to find solutions that minimize their deleterious environmental impact. This knowledge also facilitates the planning, design, and operation of engineered facilities that ensure the quality of natural environments.

IIE concentrates its efforts on the quantification of processes and the elucidation of their mechanisms. The processes of interest relate to:

  • Pollutant transformation and transport in natural and engineered systems
  • Remediation of contaminated sites
  • Development of novel processes for the treatment of water, wastewater, and solid waste
