Activities
In order to accomplish the above-mentioned missions, the Waste Management Facility is committed to treating and disposing of all type P2 waste as well as agar plates containing class 1 GMOs produced within the SV School, in accordance with federal and cantonal directives and GLP guidelines. Liquid and solid waste is collected by the Facility’s personnel on a bi-weekly basis. All waste is neutralized by autoclaving and disposed of by an external company after treatment.
The personnel of the Waste Management Facility manages a stock of hard plastic drums for the collection and processing of Afar culture waste containing BSL2 bacteria or class 1 genetically modified organisms.
The Facility also maintains a common stock of BSL2 lab coats for the FSV. Dirty lab coats are decontaminated by autoclaving and then dispatched to the supplier for washing.
In addition, the department is responsible for providing bar code labels to laboratories for identification of solid waste bags, liquid waste bottles and agar waste canisters. Yellow plastic bags are also provided to users for the collection of dirty BSL2 gowns, as well as red plastic boxes to store BSL2 waste awaiting collection.
